Refurbish or Replace? How to Handle Used Racking in Warehouses

Wondering whether to refurbish or replace your existing used warehouse racking? Learn how to inspect rack condition, identify reusable scenarios and judge when full rack replacement is necessary for overseas storage projects.

Refurbish or Replace? How to Handle Used Racking in Overseas Warehouses

Before putting any racking into service, a comprehensive condition assessment must be carried out. Do not load goods onto your existing racks immediately. Complete these basic inspections first:

Structural Damage Inspection : Check uprights for impact-induced bending, beam deformation, weld cracks, missing safety pins and loose bolts.

Material & Load Capacity Verification : Confirm the original rated load specifications and steel grade. Many used racks lack original load reports, making it impossible to confirm their actual safe working load.

Scenarios Suitable for Partial Refurbishment & Reuse of Old Racks

Refurbishment and reuse are feasible only if all the below conditions are met:

  • No structural bending or cracks on the rack frame, with minor corrosion only.
  • Original design documents and load parameters are available for structural safety review.
  • The existing structure matches your current pallet dimensions and cargo weight requirements.

When Full Rack Replacement Is Recommended

Full replacement is advised if any of the following issues exist, as the overall refurbishment cost may exceed the price of brand-new racking:

  • Bent or deformed uprights/beams, weld cracks, or severe corrosion are detected.
