The economy is experiencing vigorous development, and the logistics and transportation industry plays a significant role in driving economic growth. Storage is an integral part of logistics and transportation, and storage racks play a crucial role in enhancing storage functionality, increasing storage space utilization, and providing convenience for logistics and transportation. However, there are still some issues in the development of storage racks. Based on this, this paper analyzes heavy-duty drive-in racking and provides suggestions for reference.<\/p>\n

Introduction\uff1a<\/strong>
\nAs early as the 1990s, the racking industry began to rise, and to this day, with the further development of the industry, racks have become increasingly diverse in terms of weight, size, and access methods . With the rapid development of the logistics industry, the demand for and requirements of racks have also increased. Overall, the racking industry lacks comprehensive industry standards during its development. The competition in the racking industry is fierce, and for relevant enterprises to achieve better development, they must start from rack development, design, and production management to gain an advantage in the competitive market.<\/p>\n

I. Development of Racks<\/strong>
\nAs a type of logistics equipment, racks can significantly improve warehouse space utilization, increase warehouse capacity, and improve storage and logistics production efficiency [2]. The emergence of steel racks in the 1960s played a positive role in the development of industrial automation, providing good support for large-scale storage needs, significantly increasing storage capacity, improving cargo handling efficiency, and accelerating the turnover of goods and funds [3]. As a result, the multi-tier steel rack structure quickly gained development and became the main storage facility. Drive-in racking, also known as drive-in pallet racking, is one of the most commonly used rack types in current storage and is mainly used for cargo storage. It effectively increases cargo capacity and density, bringing significant economic benefits to enterprises. The advantage of drive-in racking is its ability to maximize the use of limited space and store more goods. The emergence of heavy-duty drive-in racking can be attributed to the progress in production and technology. It has been widely used in various fields such as logistics, chemical, electrical manufacturing, and light industry. However, overall, heavy-duty drive-in racking started earlier and is technologically advanced in Europe, with nearly half of the rack companies located there. In contrast, heavy-duty drive-in racking started relatively late in China, and its level of development still needs improvement. Most of the analysis and research on it are based on foreign research experiences.<\/p>\n

II. Analysis of the Advantages and Disadvantages of Heavy-Duty Drive-In Racking<\/strong>
\nHeavy-duty drive-in racking can be considered the most cost-effective and widely used type of rack in the current storage system. When using heavy-duty drive-in racking, goods are placed on pallets and retrieved when needed, making it more suitable for storing large quantities of the same type of goods [4]. However, heavy-duty drive-in racking requires forklift operation and the forklift needs to operate in the aisles, so it is necessary to control the depth of the racking. Typically, controlling the depth to more than ten pallets is appropriate. Additionally, due to the limitations of forklift access, the space utilization rate of heavy-duty drive-in racking is approximately 70%.<\/p>\n

The advantages of heavy-duty drive-in racking include maximizing storage capacity in minimal space. This is mainly because the structural design of heavy-duty drive-in racking differs significantly from that of ordinary pallet racking. Heavy-duty drive-in racking does not have cross beams, making forklift operation more convenient and ensuring storage density. If it is used to store large quantities of goods and varieties of coats, priority should be given to heavy-duty drive-in racking [5]. Not only that, this kind of racking structure is simple, so the cost is also very low, so many logistics companies will prefer this type of racking.<\/p>\n

However, heavy-duty drive-in shelves also have certain application drawbacks, mainly manifested in the poor lighting inside the shelves, which poses significant risks during forklift operations for storage and retrieval of goods. In terms of space utilization, the space utilization rate of heavy-duty drive-in shelves needs further improvement, especially for spaces exceeding six meters, which are challenging to operate and may even compromise the stability of the shelves. When it comes to storage and retrieval of goods, this type of shelving system follows a first-in, first-out (FIFO) sequence and has certain requirements for the quality and specifications of pallets.<\/p>\n

III. Analysis of Applicability of Heavy-Duty Drive-In Shelves for Storage Objects<\/strong>
\nAs a comprehensive system, the heavy-duty drive-in shelving system has a certain continuity and remains intact without being affected by aisles. Pallets, as the primary storage method for heavy-duty drive-in shelves, are more suitable for larger-sized, large-quantity, and relatively homogeneous goods, especially for storing standard unit goods. Compared to pallet racking systems, the advantage of heavy-duty drive-in shelves lies in their effective utilization in warehouses, which can significantly increase warehouse utilization rates by about 30% and can be considered the most efficient type of storage shelving system. On the support guide rails of heavy-duty drive-in shelves, pallets are generally placed from inside to outside without excessive gaps between pallets, resulting in high storage density. Therefore, this type of shelving system is preferred for storing goods with high storage costs, such as food and tobacco. Due to the FIFO sequence, goods should be stored from the innermost area and gradually outward.<\/p>\n

IV. Suggestions for the Development of Heavy-Duty Drive-In Shelves<\/strong>
\nIn the early stages of development in China, the structure of heavy-duty drive-in shelves was designed based on foreign standards, resulting in a relatively singular structural design influenced by manufacturing equipment and design capabilities. Due to the difficulty in conducting accurate mechanical calculations during racking design and manufacturing, it is challenging to ensure the strength and stability of the shelves. Therefore, to avoid accidents during storage, bulky and heavy materials are commonly used for racking manufacturing.
\nHowever, with the further development of heavy-duty drive-in shelves in China and the increasing demands and requirements for shelves, it has prompted the upgrading of racking manufacturing companies. Not all companies in the racking industry have a thorough understanding of market demands and future development directions, leading to a lack of awareness regarding the urgency of transforming and upgrading racking production and manufacturing. This has resulted in a failure to update technologies in a timely manner, ultimately affecting logistics transportation costs. Moreover, the warehousing industry lacks sound laws and regulations to provide guidance for industry management, and there is a need to further enhance market operation order and standardization.<\/p>\n

From an international perspective, current racking design standards mainly rely on foreign racking manufacturing association standards. However, in China, the variety of shelves is relatively limited, and there is a lack of industry standards. The racking products within the industry exhibit significant differences. If companies want to select different shelves, they have to purchase from multiple suppliers. Due to the absence of industry standards, the racking industry has a low entry barrier, leading to the emergence of numerous racking manufacturing enterprises and fierce market competition. To promote the healthy development of the domestic racking industry and enable racking manufacturing companies to make steady progress, the following recommendations are proposed:
\nFirstly, in terms of technology, there is a need to increase investment in technical aspects. Currently, the most common material used in racking manufacturing is cold-formed thin-walled steel profiles. To enhance their competitive advantage, efforts should be made to make the materials as lightweight as possible. In terms of mechanical design, reference can be made to steel structure and cold-formed thin-walled steel profile technical standards. In order to ensure the safety of the use of shelves as much as possible, experiments should also be attached importance in the research process, with the help of a large number of experimental studies to provide reference for racking research; Second, in terms of cost. With the increase of labor costs, the development pressure of racking enterprises has increased. In the face of this problem, racking production enterprises need to do a good job of self-management, by improving the production process, improve production capacity, and ensure quality to reduce costs; Finally, in terms of racking industry standards.
