Pallet racking is one of the most important pieces of equipment in a warehouse. It supports thousands of kilograms of inventory every day, often while forklifts operate within a few meters of the structure. A small impact or damaged component may seem harmless, but if left untreated, it can reduce the rack’s structural capacity, damage inventory, cause downtime, or even lead to a serious collapse.
For warehouse managers, regular racking inspections are not simply about compliance. They are a practical way to protect employees, inventory and warehouse productivity.

Inspection frequency should be adjusted according to warehouse conditions, traffic levels and local requirements. A practical inspection system should include immediate reporting of damage, regular internal inspections and periodic expert inspections. SEMA recommends risk-based inspections and at least one expert inspection annually.

What Should You Do When Damage Is Found?
Do not simply straighten, weld or repaint a damaged rack and put it back into service. Racking is an engineered structure, and repairs or replacements should be assessed by a competent person and follow the original manufacturer’s requirements.
Warehouse employees should report damage as soon as it is noticed. Managers should then record the location, take photographs, assess the risk and arrange appropriate repair or replacement.
A simple inspection routine can prevent a much more expensive problem later. Regular checks mean fewer unexpected failures, less downtime, better protection for employees and inventory, and a longer service life for your pallet racking system.
